simpleshow foundation Supports Wikimedia Deutschland
simpleshow foundation supports Wikimedia Deutschland with the search of new Wikipedia editors. And how do we do that?
Within the German Wikipedia campaign “Mach mit”, in English known as “Join In”, we cooperated with Wikimedia Deutschland and so far created three explainer videos: What kinds of information can be published in Wikipedia?
How do people work on Wikipedia?
Can anyone edit Wikipedia?
Because we strongly support the distribution of knowledge around the world, we didn’t stop at creating these videos in German. We also published an English version.
Elisabeth Mandl of Wikimedia Deutschland sums up the intention of our videos and our cooperation pretty well:
“To get more people inspired about working on Wikipedia, we produced our own explainer videos in collaboration with simpleshow foundation. They each explain basic Wikipedia concepts in a very simple way. The collaboration went amazingly and I’m happy to be working with an organization that, like us, is committed to making the world’s knowledge accessible to everyone.”
Our videos explain, how working for Wikipedia works and what to consider when writing for Wikipedia. The “Mach Mit” campaign is addressing people of all age, gender and cultural background to volunteer for Wikipedia and contribute to the encyclopedia by writing articles or editing them.
Within our first video we take a look at the topics than can be published in Wikipedia. Easily explained it shows, how articles should be written and especially which sources to use. Second, we show how to work for Wikipedia. So, it sheds light on the community behind the articles. There are volunteers that contribute only, but there are also people who make sure that nobody in the community is harassed and that the published information is always correct. Also, the community organizes special events for editors of the Wikipedia. Which brings us to our third video: Who can edit Wikipedia? For new volunteers it’s important to know whether or not they are allowed to edit every article on Wikipedia and what they have to consider when they do edit. Therefore we explained the term “semi-protected articles” and show which status volunteers need to receive in order to edit this kind of articles.
Working with Wikimedia Deutschland was an incredible experience. As a young nonprofit organization we are still evolving and growing. From Wikimedia Deutschland we can learn how to work with volunteers and we are looking forward to future collaborations. Together, we can explain the world.
